Cold air, indoor heating, and hot showers change the conditions our skin lives in. Water escapes more readily, and the skin can begin to feel tight, rough, or uncomfortable.
There is a difference between hydration and moisture retention. Water hydrates; oils help soften the skin and slow the loss of that water. It's one reason I prefer applying botanical oils immediately after bathing, while the skin is still slightly damp.
I've paired Skin Potion No.1 and Ritual Body Oil for the winter months because together they make caring for the face and body remarkably uncomplicated. A Little Something from the Forest
With this winter pairing, I'm including a complimentary stick of Ecuadorian palo santo (Bursera graveolens), sourced through Marsofia, a supplier that describes working with a network of women harvesters and artisans who collect naturally fallen wood and allow it to cure in Ecuador's tropical dry forests.
Palo santo has a peculiar sweetness beneath its resinous, woody scent, something almost caramel-like. It's an aroma that changes with warmth and lingers long after the wood has stopped smoldering.
