About the plant
Theobroma cacao also called the cacao tree and the cocoa tree is a small evergreen tree in the Malvaceae family. Its seeds, cocoa beans, are used to make chocolate, cocoa solids, and cocoa butter. Cacao beans have been used as part of ritual beverages and once as a major currency system in pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations.
