Healing Properties
Clary Sage has been revered for having many powerful healing properties. Known to induce a feeling of euphoria when smelled, the general energy of this plant is calming and peace-inducing.
Often referred to as the "woman's oil", it is known to be one of the most powerful aids for relaxation during menstrual cramps labor, and acute emotional stress. Use of the oil in baths, body massage, or hot compress has reported positive results.
Stories from midwives report the oil was used in a blend to massage onto the lower back for oncoming labor pains. Other historic uses report clary sage as a powerful aphrodisiac for those who are so stressed that their libido has stopped and that it has been used before bed to stimulate dreaming.
Clary sage means “clear eyes” from the Latin word 'clarus' and the seeds of the plant were once used for eye health. It was once brewed into a beer and historical papers describe it as a strong intoxicant that induced an experience of euphoria but with a terrible hangover the next day.
Chemical analysis shows that a combination of linalool and linalyl acetate, naturally occurring chemicals in clary sage, may help impart a sense of relaxation. Research of the essential oil of clary sage's chemical constituents show that it may have the following therapeutic properties:
- Antinociceptive (inhibits sensations of pain)
-Anti-inflammatory (reduces inflammation)
-Antispasmodic (suppresses spasms)
-Analgesic (reduces pain)
-Antibacterial (Killing or inhibiting bacteria)
-Antifungal (inhibits the growth of fungi)
-Anxiolytic (reduces anxiety; tranquilizing)
-Anti-depressant (counteracting depression)
About the plant
Salvia sclarea is a perennial or biennial plant with broad hairy green leaves that sometimes have a striking purple stem. It has tall flowering racemes that are the source of its essential oil. The plant grows up to 3-4 feet at full maturity. It is native to the Mediterranean. All parts of the plant are aromatic.
